Nightguards/TMJ Treatment

Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) disorder actually encompasses a large host of symptoms and is truly a unique situation with each patient. Helping to manage TMJ disorder is a process of progressive treatments starting with the most simple techniques and, depending on the patient's symptom severity, getting more aggressive as deemed necessary by the doctor. The most simple treatments include minor lifestyle changes such as:

  • stress management
  • elimination of food that is difficult to chew such as gum, hard carrots or ice
  • hot/cold packs to reduce joint soreness

Another mild, effective treatment is fitting the patient with a nightguard (also referred to as a bite splint). The guard prevents night grinding thus decreasing the tension in the inflamed joints.
